What does the union need to be stronger and more effective?
It needs YOU.
The Graduate Employees’ Organizing Committee (GEOC) is a grassroots organization. That means that GEOC works because of volunteers like YOU who make the union strong and effective. GEOC supports, connects, and engages graduate employees in four main ways.
How can you get involved?
The first line of connection from GEOC to its membership is the Stewards Committee. Stewards are volunteers from different academic departments who act as liaisons and information resources to the membership. Stewards meet regularly to discuss issues that are going on and to strategize ways to deal with those issues. That might include planning social or informational events. It might mean talking with members or writing articles for a newsletter. Stewards are one of the most important ways that the union stays fresh and active. If you’re interested in being involved as a steward or just finding out more about what it entails, contact Nick Bergeron, GEOC Vice-President at bb8133@wayne.edu. Come and join a great group of people from all over campus.
Another important way that you can get involved is through the Grievance Committee. The Grievance Committee helps enforce the contract that GEOC bargained with the University. When employees find themselves without pay checks and health insurance; when employers unfairly discipline employees; when employees are harassed or discriminated against the Grievance Committee offers support, information, and legal resources. You don’t need any experience to be a part of the Grievance Committee. All you need is a desire to learn and an urge to help. If you’d like to be involved, contact Yu Sun, GEOC Grievance Committee Chair, at sunyuwowo@yahoo.com.
As a result of the negotiations that took place during the 2008-2009 academic year, GEOC has been working with the university to examine the Other Eligible Persons (OEP) pilot program, particularly looking at how this program affects the members of GEOC. Contact Rae McFadden, GEOC Steward, at lakathygrande@gmail.com to get involved with this OEP committee.
And finally, GEOC is always looking for activists and volunteers to be involved in social and political events, as well as other services like website maintenance, newsletters, press liaisons, and public relations. Contact Mark Coco, GEOC Staff Organizer, at markacoco@gmail.com.
